On February 11, 2026, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the SAVE America Act (H.R. 7296).
AT THE POLLS: A standard REAL ID or driver's license proves identity, but is INSUFFICIENT to prove citizenship. Unless you have an Enhanced Driver's License (only available in NY, MI, MN, VT, and WA), your registration may be flagged. If challenged, you will be forced to vote by Provisional Ballot, which will not count unless you bring physical "papers" to the election office within days.
REGISTRATION: You must present Documentary Proof of Citizenship (like a Passport, Birth Certificate, or Naturalization Papers) IN PERSON. The law effectively ends online and mail-in registration for those without pre-verified federal documents. Your license alone CANNOT be used to register.
Answer a few questions to find out exactly which specific IDs and documents you now need to bring to the polling place to ensure your vote is counted.
